Many of you know what I am talking about when ...

Many of you know what I am talking about when I talk of �hosanna moments," those transcendent moments in our lives when, without warning, we are overwhelmed by a close encounter with eternity, a surprise of the spirit�those moments when, while engaged in the temporal rhythms of our daily and earth- encrusted lives, comfortably duped by familiar routines, we are suddenly brought face-to-face with the holy, swept by the Spirit of God into a transcendent reality, overwhelmed by undeniable evidence of a literal Father in Heaven who knows you and knows me and is somehow interested and involved in our lives. The "We'll-Sing-and-We'll-Shout" moment is that moment when our God, Brother-of-Jared-ing us, reaches his hand through the veil to startle our sensibilities, to reassure, to comfort, to guide, to prod, to change our course. Then our spirits soar, our souls are renewed, and we can never really be the same again.

If you and I would truly pray and ask in faith, as did Joseph Smith�if we would pray with the expectation to act and not just to express�then the work of proclaiming the gospel would move forward in a remarkable way. Such a prayer of faith might include some of the following elements:

-Thanking Heavenly Father for the doctrines and ordinances of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, which bring hope and happiness into our lives.
-Asking for courage and boldness to open our mouths and share the gospel with our family and friends.
-Entreating Heavenly Father to help us identify individuals and families who will be receptive to our invitation to be taught by the missionaries in our homes.
-Pledging to do our part this day and this week and petitioning for help to overcome anxiety, fear, and hesitation.
-Seeking for the gift of discernment�for eyes to see and ears to hear missionary opportunities as they occur.
-Praying fervently for the strength to act as we know we should.

This same pattern of holy communication and consecrated work can be applied in our prayers for the poor and the needy, for the sick and the afflicted, for family members and friends who are struggling, and for those who are not attending Church meetings.

There are good people throughout the world, men...

There are good people throughout the world, men and women who love God, who are earnestly striving, even without the fulness of the gospel, to be true to the standards of decency and integrity they have been taught. Indeed, everyone has access to some measure of light and truth from the Almighty. President Brigham Young declared that there has never been �a man or woman upon the face of the earth, from the days of Adam to this day, who has not been enlightened, instructed, and taught by the revelations of Jesus Christ� (Deseret News Weekly, 8 Feb. 1855, 2). The prophets teach that if people will be true to the light within them�the Light of Christ�they will be led to the higher light of the Holy Ghost found in the covenant gospel, either in this life or in the life to come. �And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit� (D&C 84:46; see D&C 84:47�48; also Gospel Doctrine, 67�68; Bruce R. McConkie, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith [1985], 260�61).

In fact, is it not possible that one reason so many parallels and resemblances exist between the fulness of the gospel and the various approximations of the truth is that men and women are responding to what might be called �spirit memories� of the past? These would be intimations of things we once knew that now seem just out of conscious awareness. President Joseph F. Smith observed: �All those salient truths which come home so forcibly to the head and heart seem but the awakening of the memories of the spirit. Can we know anything here that we did not know before we came?� (Gospel Doctrine, 13). Is this not why so many who join the Church recognize in the teachings of the missionaries things that they feel they have always known, things, interestingly enough, that are not necessarily to be found in their former religion? We generally refer to those who come into the Church as converts, implying that they turned from another belief to embrace the testimony of the Restoration. While that happens in many instances, those who are baptized will often say, �Everything the missionaries told me I already believed!� That which we call a conversion often seems to be the awakening of a distant memory, an echo from the past. �People ask me why I left my old church,� the convert says. �I tell them it was not a matter of leaving my old church so much as it was a matter of coming home.�

Experiences of work, relations with people, and an awareness of the rightness and wrongness of actions will always be relevant. Your journal, like most others, will tell of problems as old as the world and how you dealt with them.

Self-improvement is a process, not an outcome. ...

Self-improvement is a process, not an outcome. It changes constantly, particularly at different points in your life. Wherever you are today is all right. Don't beat yourself up. Accept yourself and learn and grow from where you are. There's nothing wrong with aspiring to be in a constant state of total awareness, but you cannot even approach that goal until you've taken the time to look in the mirror and see what you need to see. Your true objective should be to inspire personal growth and positive change, moving you closer to what you want. If your aspiration is learning and growth and positive change, then you'll be just fine.

To accomplish this simple task, all you need to do is to expend some effort. You�ve got to do the heavy-lifting up front before you can figure out exactly where you want to go. Only you can be trusted with such a critical assignment. You are the only one who truly has a vested interest in your own life. Only you can handle the important decisions needed to define and create the life and lifestyle you desire to live.
