Clayton M. Christensen, a Harvard Business School professor and Romney supporter who holds a leadership position in the Mormon Church, saw the decision as a sign that Romney is making a serious bid to become the first Mormon president.

"I'm delighted that he's decided to do it," Christensen said. "It really is a great church, and the more people can understand what it is and what it does, the more I think they'll trust that he acts in the best interests of the country."

...I wouldn't promote my best friend's candidacy if I thought his background--including his religious beliefs--would result in massive Republican-base defections because of some personal characteristic. I have no interest in winning arguments and losing elections. The times in which we live don't allow for quixotic stands that end up with the nomination of a candidate who cannot win.

I would say that rather than worrying about dictation from Salt Lake City, we should be more concerned about whether or not Mitt Romney is able to use the agency of the government for the idealistic ends that are truly his legacy as a Latter-day Saint.
